When Giving Becomes Both My Strength and My Weakness

My heart feels numb.

Not because life has been cruel to me.

Not because I have stopped believing in people.

But because there are so many feelings I have been carrying quietly for so long that somewhere along the way, I stopped knowing what to do with them.

I have bottled up disappointment.

I have swallowed words.

I have forgiven things I never spoke about.

I have smiled when I wanted to cry.

And I have continued to show up – even on days when I had nothing left to give.

Life has been throwing challenges at me lately. Challenges I never asked for. Situations I never imagined I would have to handle.

And honestly, sometimes I wonder, “How much more can one person carry?”

Yet, somehow, I still hope.

That is the strange thing about me.

Even when life gives me reasons to become bitter, I still want to be kind.

Even when people disappoint me, I still find myself understanding their side.

Even when I feel exhausted, I still ask, “Are you okay?”

I give.

I give my time.

I give my energy.

I give my attention.

I give understanding.

I give second chances.

Sometimes, I give pieces of myself that I should have kept for me.

And for the longest time, I thought this was simply who I was.

A giver.

Someone who loves deeply. Someone who feels deeply. Someone who believes that if you can make someone’s day a little easier, you should.

But I am slowly learning something uncomfortable:

Over-giving can be both a strength and a weakness.

It is my strength because it has made me compassionate.

It has allowed me to understand pain without judging it. It has helped me create spaces where people feel heard. It has taught me that sometimes a little kindness can save someone from a very dark day.

But it is also my weakness when I forget that I am a person too.

When I keep giving even when I am empty.

When I keep explaining myself to people who have already decided not to understand.

When I keep forgiving without allowing myself to heal.

When I keep choosing everyone else’s peace at the cost of my own.

There is a difference between being kind and abandoning yourself to keep others comfortable.

I am learning that now.

Maybe kindness doesn’t mean saying yes every time.

Maybe forgiveness doesn’t mean allowing the same thing to happen repeatedly.

Maybe being there for people doesn’t mean carrying their burdens while pretending yours don’t exist.

And maybe protecting my peace doesn’t make me selfish.

For someone who has spent so much of her life giving, learning to receive feels strange.

Learning to say no feels uncomfortable.

Learning to say “This hurt me” feels vulnerable.

Learning to walk away from situations that drain me feels almost like I am betraying the person I have always been.

But perhaps I am not becoming less kind.

Perhaps I am finally learning to be kind to myself too.

I don’t want my heart to become hard because life has been difficult.

I don’t want challenges to turn me into someone who stops caring.

I don’t want disappointment to make me stop believing in goodness.

I just want to learn how to give without losing myself.

To love without constantly overextending myself.

To care without carrying everything.

To forgive without forgetting my boundaries.

And to remain soft without allowing the world to break me.

So yes, my heart feels numb today.

But underneath that numbness, I know there is still hope.

Because despite everything, I still choose kindness.

Not because life has always been kind to me.

But because I don’t want the things that hurt me to change the goodness within me.

Maybe that is my greatest strength.

And maybe, from now on, I will make sure it doesn’t have to be my greatest weakness.

I will continue to give – but I will also learn to give myself the same love, patience, understanding and kindness that I so freely give to everyone else.
